WHAT IS A BREAST REDUCTION?
WHAT IS A BREAST REDUCTION?
For those with larger or heavier breasts, breast reduction surgery is an attractive solution to persistent shoulder and back problems, skin irritation, and even the emotional impact of feeling self-conscious and having low self-esteem.
If you have any of these problems or are just unhappy with how big your breasts are, you might be thinking about a reduction mammaplasty but don’t know what to expect. Our board-certified plastic surgeon in Chicago will tell you in detail what to expect both before and after your breast reduction surgery.
REDUCE BACK PROBLEMS
What are the Benefits of Breast Reduction?
Choosing to have breast reduction can be a very gratifying decision. This procedure is commonly combined with a tummy tuck for patients who desire an improvement in their full body shape. In addition to achieving smaller breasts, breast reduction surgery can also:
- Enhance breast shape
- Improve nipple position and areola size
- Help correct breast asymmetry (breasts of different sizes)
BRING BALANCE TO YOUR BODY
Your Breast Reduction Procedure
During the procedure, a general anesthetic is usually administered. Then incisions are made, in a circle around the areola or straight line from the areola to the bottom of the breast.
Similar to a breast lift, tissue and extra fat are taken out of the breast, and the remaining tissue and skin are repositioned and tightened. Liposuction is sometimes used to get rid of fat, and Dr. Shifrin will talk to you about whether this is right for you. Also, the nipple and areola may be relocated depending on the amount of tissue removed.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BREAST REDUCTION?
Most patients who want breast reduction surgery have breasts that are too big for their body size or frame. They deal with pain in their shoulders, neck, or back because they have big breasts. It’s common for those with big breasts to have bad posture from having to support the weight of their breasts. They may also have uncomfortable skin problems. If you suffer from any of these issues, contact Dr. Shifrin for a consultation.
Breast Reduction Recovery
You will notice and feel a difference immediately after the procedure, but the final results may not be apparent for a few weeks to a few months.
After surgery, it’s also important for our Chicago breast reduction patients to follow the post-op instructions Dr. Shifrin provides, like taking a few days off to recover, getting up and moving around, and staying away from strenuous activities for a few weeks. In addition to smaller breasts and less pain and discomfort, long-term effects include scarring and less sensation in the nipple. The incision wounds may be swollen and red for the first few weeks, but you’ll notice a significant change over the next few months. Scars usually heal differently depending on the patient. Although the area around your nipple may be a little numb right after surgery, you will start to feel things again as you heal.
Breast Reduction Results
Most people find that their breast size stays smaller after surgery because the removed tissue shouldn’t grow back. However, remember that the breast reduction operation does not prevent the aging process, and you may notice drooping over time.
Changes in your breast size and shape can also be caused by things like pregnancy or putting on weight. To ensure your breast reduction results last as long as possible, Dr. Shifrin tells his patients to wear a supportive bra. This can help keep your skin and ligaments from stretching out too much and causing your breasts to sag too soon. In addition, if your breasts have changed and you don’t like their new size or shape, you can have a breast lift or a second surgery to fix the first breast reduction. Most of our Chicago breast reduction patients don’t need a second surgery, but some may want to have it done again a few years later to improve changes they don’t like about their breasts’ appearance.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How many cup sizes can I go down?
Most women who have breast reduction surgery drop one or two cup sizes. This is usually enough to eliminate the many problems that come with having breasts that are too big while keeping a body shape that is attractive and in proportion.
Will it hurt?
You will be given anesthesia during the procedure, but you can anticipate feeling fatigued for two to three days after surgery. You will be given painkillers, and your doctor may tell you to put wrapped ice packs on sore spots to help with swelling and discomfort.
