BODY CONTOURING IN CHICAGO WITH DR. SHIFRIN
There are a wide variety of reasons why individuals seek cosmetic surgery. When a patient loses significant weight, the resulting drooping skin can be a source of embarrassment and a missed opportunity to improve their appearance. For some, the goal is to have their anatomy reflect their true vision of themselves. Dr. David Shifrin of Shifrin Plastic Surgery in Chicago uses a wide range of surgical techniques to help his Chicago body contouring patients achieve their aesthetic goals.

Your Most Authentic Self
Living in a body that feels foreign can be a challenging situation that leads to unnecessary stress and anxiety. Fortunately, the latest surgical techniques and technology have made gender reassignment more common than before. Common body contouring procedures in transgender patients include liposuction and abdominoplasty. Liposuction is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures at Shifrin Plastic Surgery. We offer several cutting-edge variations on the liposuction technique, including:
Tumescent Liposuction
With the tumescent technique, saline solution, local anesthesia, and adrenaline are infused into the area being treated. This allows Dr. Shifrin to maneuver a small instrument called a cannula, connected to a vacuum machine, to suction away excess fat and improve body contour.
Power-Assisted Liposuction
Power-assisted liposuction is a new technology where the end of the suction cannula vibrates at a rapid speed. This motion loosens the fat cells so that they may be suctioned away gently with less trauma to the surrounding tissues. Power Assisted Liposuction or PAL is performed in conjunction with the tumescent technique. This maximizes the efficiency of fat removal and patient comfort, and it helps to minimize bruising. Advantages of PAL over older techniques include; shorter procedure, less swelling and bruising, quicker recovery, more precise and even contouring, and improved overall safety.
Ultrasonic Liposuction
Ultrasonically-assisted liposuction (UAL) is a compliment to traditional forms of liposuction. Ultrasonic energy is used to break up the stubborn, hard-to-suction fat areas before the traditional liposuction removes the broken-down fat. It is particularly useful in hard-to-treat areas, areas previously treated that have tough scarring, and the fibrous, strong fat pockets present in the chest area of male gynecomastia patients.
Smartlipo™
Smartlipo™ is an exciting new development in body contouring. It offers fit, active people in Chicago the liposuction treatment they’ve been seeking – one that’s both effective and less invasive. Smartlipo uses a technology called ‘laser lipolysis’ to destroy fat cells. A small surgical wand known as a cannula delivers laser energy to areas of fatty deposits, rupturing and liquefying fat cells. The fat is then suctioned away, resulting in a permanently improved contour. As the laser energy passes from the cannula into the tissues, it seals blood vessels and reduces the bruising and swelling that can accompany traditional liposuction. It also heats the underside of the dermis of our skin, tightening and toning.
Abdominoplasty
Abdominoplasty is one of the most popular plastic surgeries for men and women. If you are a good candidate for a tummy tuck, additional combination surgeries such as liposuction also may be appropriate. Many Chicago transgender patients have abdominoplasty as part of their transformation, combining Male to Female breast augmentation or Female to Male mastectomy with body contouring to achieve their goals. We each have our own unique profile of age, body type, and tissue consistency. This profile, combined with your desired shape, is what dictates which procedure is right for you. Dr. Shifrin has the knowledge, skill, and experience to provide each patient with an individualized procedure to safely meet their goals. The following is a list of some of the tummy tuck procedures they use to achieve your desired result.
Endoscopic Tummy Tuck
The endoscopic tummy tuck is designed for patients that need muscle tightening but do not require excess skin removal. A small hidden incision is made inside the belly button and in the hair-bearing area of the pubic region. With the use of tiny cameras and special surgical equipment, the muscles are tightened, improving the profile and flattening the stomach. We often perform liposuction together with the endoscopic tummy tuck.
Mini Tummy Tuck
A mini tummy tuck is ideal for patients that have a minimal amount of abdominal skin and soft-tissue excess and/or stretch marks located below the belly button. The mini tummy tuck procedure requires a limited, and therefore the final scar will be shorter than a traditional or full tummy tuck procedure. The belly button is also left intact without any scars present in that area. Muscle tightening and liposuction can still be performed as needed.
Full Tummy Tuck
The most common tummy tuck procedure is a full traditional abdominoplasty. The majority of patients requesting abdominal contouring are best served with a full tummy tuck. The technique removes all of the excess skin and soft tissue laxity, it tightens the abdominal muscles flattening and toning the abdominal wall, changes the belly button from a stretched-out wide appearance to a smaller vertically oriented shape, and improves the entire contour and profile of the abdomen. Liposuction is frequently performed at the same time to improve the contour. Our Chicago patients at Shifrin Plastic Surgery are extremely satisfied with the results they achieve from this procedure, reporting waist size decreases on average of 2 to 4 sizes.
Reverse Tummy Tuck
The reverse tummy tuck is a unique procedure designed to help remove abdominal skin and soft-tissue laxity that is primarily located above the belly button. While the majority of the patients that present for abdominal contouring and tummy tuck have abdominal skin and soft-tissue laxity that is below the belly button, a small number of patients have the opposite. The reverse tummy tuck allows the removal of this excess skin and soft tissue located above the belly button, placing the final scar at the level of the breast fold. Muscle tightening, liposuction, as well as various breast procedures such as breast lift, breast augmentation, and breast reduction can be performed in conjunction with the reverse tummy tuck. The final scar is hidden in the breast fold.
Circumferential Tummy Tuck/Lower Body Lift
For patients seeking comprehensive solutions for excess skin and soft-tissue laxity in multiple areas, the body lift or circumferential tummy tuck is the optimal choice. This transformative procedure effectively removes excess skin and soft tissue from the abdomen, thighs, and buttocks. By removing excess tissue from the abdomen, hips, back, and upper buttocks, it creates a slimmer and flatter tummy, smoother hips and thighs, and lifted, rejuvenated buttocks. Muscle tightening, liposuction, and buttocks rejuvenation are often combined during this powerful procedure, ensuring remarkable and comprehensive results.
Revision Tummy Tuck
At our practice, we understand that some patients seek to improve or correct previous tummy tuck or body contouring procedures. Our skilled team is experienced in revision surgeries, addressing concerns such as unsightly scars, excess fat, residual soft tissue laxity, high pubic hairline, and undesirable belly button shape. With a focus on achieving your desired aesthetic outcome, we offer personalized solutions to enhance your appearance and restore your confidence.
